Fashion Designer Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda Rising To The Top At Amsterdam Fashion Week

Do you know Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda? If you haven’t heard of her yet than you will soon. I first met the lovely Zaida as a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.  She was in the fashion design program while I was in the business school. We ended up taking an elective class together and I’m thrilled that I had a chance to meet her. 

Now Zaida is an upcoming eco fashion designer who is delving into the world of sustainable fashion. She’s one of the finalists for The Green Fashion Competition at Amsterdam Fashion Week and will present a few items of her collection there next week! With her innovative use of fiber and deeply rooted respect for traditional crafts, Goveo Balmaseda has a holistic approach to design. Her company reflects its values regarding sustainability by making responsible choices from material sourcing through production, product transit and also engagement with the community. 


She's a big advocate in supporting the local textile industry. Organic Cotton is grown and woven in the USA and also dyed with natural ingredients, among them black beans, annatto seeds, turmeric, coffee, and lemon. This fabric is then quilted with recycled PET batting by an artisan in-house.

According to the Jury comments at AFW: “The focus in this collection lies on the outspoken use of handcrafted materials. Fabrics are hand-dyed and quilted and knits are made from hand-spun yarns. This in combination with multifunctional designs make the label really exiting. The business plan shows a good knowledge of sustainability issues and covers more than just the right choice of materials. Like the designer says: ‘It’s more than the clothes, my work should be a catalyst for positive change.’”

Zaida will be showing 3 looks which are made with recycled or organic materials and dyed with natural ingredients.
