Zang Toi Spring 2019 "Vive Le Yves" Fashion Show

I had the absolute pleasure of attending world renowned designer Zang Toi's Spring 2019 "Vive Le Yves" Fashion Show that paid homage to his favorite designer Yves Saint Laurent. This collection was very personal and very special to Zang as all 29 looks were a fan letter to the iconic Yves Saint Laurent.

Zang traveled to Marrakech, Morocco to visit the Saint Laurent museum for inspiration before starting on the journey of creating these Yves Saint Laurent inspired looks. Zang Toi, "I was always inspired by his works and this season I decided to pay tribute to the master himself."

Every season Zang completely outdoes himself in his work and this collection was no exception. You could literally see how much love and devotion he put into the details of every piece. It was as if Yves Saint Laurent's work came back to life but with Zang's personal twist.

Zang's show was one of the only I decided to attend during New York Fashion Week and for this special fashion show I wore a velvet dress by Zara that was similar to Zang's glamorous, sleek style.

I've been to Zang's show pretty much for a full decade now and every time I'm completely blown away by the enormity of his talent. Can you tell how excited I was in this picture?! :P

One of my favorite looks was this french lavender couture silk faille sleeveless shirt-waisted jump-shorts with Paris pink couture silk faille ball-skirt lined with aubergine couture silk faille.

Another one of my favorites was the finale black couture silk gazar strapless mini dress with hand-beaded Paris pink butterflies.

After the show I ran into Bonnie Bien, the owner of La Presse PR the firm behind many of Zang's runway shows including this one. I had actually interned for Bonnie back when I was a college student at FIT and helped put together many of the fashion shows. We were both excited to see each other again and she graciously invited me backstage after the show.

Backstage was a whole world in itself with celebrities, press and socialites all vying for Zang's attention to congratulate him on the show. Above were a few New York socialites posing for a photo with Zang.

I was sooo excited to see Zang again and tell him how much I loved his show! Zang is such a special person and an inspiration to fellow American dream chasing immigrants like myself.

Zang was born and raised in a small village, Kuala Krai in Kelantan, Malaysia. He was the youngest of seven children of a local grocer. Zang came to New York City at the age of 20 where he studied at the distinguished Parsons School of Design. In August 1989, he opened his atelier and soon after, U.S Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour featured Zang in March 1990 issue and he was one of the first Asian designers championed by the renowned editor. Most notably in 2013 Zang was awarded the title of Datuk by the King of Malaysia.

Zang’s work has been featured in major publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Financial Times, etc. Not only has he dressed Hollywood celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Elizabeth Taylor, Farrah Fawcett, Kristie Alley, Patti LaBelle, Gong Li, Eva Longoria, Fergie and Heather Graham, but has also created luxurious wardrobe for philanthropists and royalty including Melinda Gates and Saudi Princess Haifa Bandar Al Saud

Thank you so much Zang and Bonnie for having me, always such a dream to attend the fashion show! :)
